More than 30 years of hydraulic engineering, modeling and testing has led to the creation of our unique – and dynamic – interior water features called the Aqua Mystique. The complex bubble patterns it creates are truly mesmerizing. They are soothing and relaxing and must be experienced in person to be fully appreciated.
Practical Origins
How did this incredible combination of art and science come to be? Surprisingly, it was in 1977 when a federal judge ordered a prominent mid-Western city to stop polluting one of the Great Lakes with untreated wastewater during storm events.
While pondering the solution, Dr. Allen Davis – then an award-winning CH2M Hill engineer – observed fascinating, repeatable bubble patterns in clear-plastic pipes that were used as models. It was then that he began considering creating a dynamic modern water feature that would replicate the beautiful water patterns in an illuminated art form available to the general public.
Golden Ratio
Eventually, he began to see how the Aqua Mystique created patterns similar to those seen in nature – in tornadoes, seashells, galaxies, and unicellular structures. A curious irrational number, (an irrational number is one where a few more decimal places can always be added if more accuracy is needed) defined by mathematicians as the ratio of two segments of a line that satisfy:
AC/CB= (AC+CB)/AC = ᶲ/1 = 1.6180339887
is known as the Golden Ratio. This number can be used as the basis for mathematical formulas that describe spiral and helical shapes that closely match many of Mother Nature’s shapes, which occur on both microscopic and macroscopic scales. The following images show some of nature’s favorites:

The Golden Ratio also happens to be the art world’s consensus favorite height-to-width ratio for rectangular frames and objects. Extensive application of this ratio can be observed in such famous paintings as “The Mona Lisa” and “The Last Supper”.
Elegant but Simple – and Easy to Maintain
The Aqua Mystique water feature overcomes the obstacles of most large-scale water features: it requires no special construction or electrical wiring for installation. Just plug it in and enjoy a dynamic, engaging show that is based on engineering and scientific principles.
The water tubes are enclosed in high-quality cabinetry and illuminated by colorful LED lights that enhance the bubble-pattern sequences that result from spiral flow at the feature’s inlet. The soothing sounds created by the water can be adjusted.
Several ready-made options – as well as completely customized systems – are available to fit any budget, space or decor.
